The PRO MG has been part of the Cochrane Collaboration since May 2001.  Results of a Medline search indicates that the number of RCTs including an evaluation from the patient’s perspective has drastically increased in the last decade (n=5177) compared to the previous decade (n=886). This growth - by almost a factor of six – reflects both the interest of investigators and the importance of this outcome in the evaluation of the impact of healthcare interventions.

The main objective of the PRO Methods Group is to advise Cochrane reviewers about when and how to incorporate PROs into systematic reviews. Some Collaborative Review Groups have encountered difficulties when incorporating these data, including problems in pooling and interpreting data and in evaluating the validity of HRQL measures. Members of the PRO Methods Group are  participating in Cochrane Review Groups to advance attention to and use of PROs as part of systematic reviews.

The ongoing activities of the Methods group include the following:

■    A chapter has been prepared on Patient-Reported Outcomes for inclusion in the revsised Cochrane Handbook.  This chapter is in review but will appear in the next edition of the Handbook.

■    A glossary of Patient-Reported Outcomes terms to supplement the glossary in the Reviewers Handbook has been prepared. The Glossary will be available on the PRO Methods Group Website in 2007.

■    The XV Cochrane Collaboration meeting is being held in Sao Paulo, Brazil 23-27 October.  Convenor Gord Guyatt will be speaking at Plenary Session 1 (24 October)  on The Evolution of Evidence-Based Medicine:  Where Cochrane Fits In.  Convenor Donald Patrick will be speaking in Plenary Session 2 (25 October)  on Assessing and Reporting Outcomes that are Important to Patients in Trials and Reviews.  Donald and Gord will give a workshop on Wednesday, October 24th on Evalution of translation and cultural adaptation in global clinical trials included in Cochrane reviews.
