Keywords: erectile dysfunction, ISL questionnaire, female partner, sexual life, satisfaction, real life Abstract The Index of Sexual Life (ISL) is the first self-administered tool providing a specific evaluation of the impact of erectile dysfunction (ED) on quality and satisfaction of female partners’ sexual life . Its good psychometric properties were demonstrated in a study including couples with men treated for ED. Its ability to show the impact of ED on female partners was demonstrated in two prospective studies. Its use in clinical practice helps couples to consider ED and treatment together. Developed in French and linguistically validated in US English, it is available for use through the MAPI Research Trust.
Introduction
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a sexual dysfunction characterized by the inability to achieve or maintain an erection of the penis sufficient for sexual performance1. It is now widely accepted that male and female sexual dysfunction involves and affects both partners in the relationship. The Female Experience of Men’s Attitudes to Life Events and Sexuality (FEMALES) study demonstrated that ED has significant adverse effects on female partners’ sexual experiences and their satisfaction with their sexual relationships2. Furthermore, when their partners’ ED was treated, it was demonstrated that women had improved sexual function and a more satisfying sexual experience2,3.
