Ecology and the Internet
Despite quotas for chronically-ill adults, sampling from consumer access panels created for marketing research made it possible to identify households and complete 4,000 surveys in only 40 hours (Ware et al, 2004).
More recently, an NIH-sponsored Internet-based employee weight management survey had to be shut down within the first 10 minutes of offering, because of the volume of responses. Surveys were administered during work time via web browser by clicking on a web link in an email message.  More than 1,000 employees responded within the first 10 minutes of our initial e-mail announcement.  The entire sample completed 30-minute surveys in one wave lasting two hours.  Study data was available for analysis within two days following the end of data collection. Perhaps, a $15 dollar incentive was too much in today’s economy.
