Page 3 of 3 • A smaller subset of nurses was followed up on the kind of dyads they form with other patients over time. The nurses and their patients were interviewed in-depth concerning the main variables of this study: openness and engagement during the interaction, factors affecting their behaviours, personal characteristics, patient satisfaction, among others. A total of 55 nurses and patients were interviewed for the qualitative portion of the study. The quantitative data on nurse & patient characteristics including the dyads and patient satisfaction scores will be subjected to factor analysis and subsequently to path analysis. This will establish the intermediary role the nurse-patient dyads play in linking the characteristics to outcome. Furthermore, the qualitative interviews will shed more light on how the dyads are formed, the evolution they undergo after a series of interactions, and the factors that bring about a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship.
I wish to express our sincerest thanks to the Mapi Research Trust for the Catherine Pouget award 2008. The funding support is greatly appreciated.
