Global Impact of Pharmacist Intervention on Patient Care and Cost - A Descriptive Study at a Trinidad Hospital.

Abstract

Background:  Medication management intervention is a primary function of pharmacists. Pharmacist intervention on potential drug-related problems can result in improved patient care and decrease health cost.

 

Purpose: To analyze the frequency, the clinical significance and the costs of the interventions.

Method:  A retrospective study was conducted at a hospital pharmacy in Trinidad.  On year of documented data was collected on an approved form.  Data analysis was performed using SPSS.   The study used descriptive statistics.  
Results:  Pharmacists had screened 47 382 prescriptions. The intervention rate was 5.2%. Approximately 31% could have resulted in negative patient outcomes. The intervention, in relation to published studies can result in cost savings.   
Conclusion:  Internationally pharmacist interventions on drug-related problems could have a positive impact on patient care and health costs.
